The Weather Factor: Up or Down, How to Decide on Your Wedding Day Hair

The Weather Factor: Up or Down, How to Decide on Your Wedding Day Hair

As a bride-to-be you are probably already worried about a million little details involved in planning your wedding, from choosing your dress to deciding on the perfect hairstyle. But, when it comes to your wedding day, the weather can add an extra level of anxiety, especially if your ceremony is outside.

Should you wear your hair up or down? This is a question that many brides struggle with. You aren't alone. Here I will provide you with some tips on how to decide on your wedding day hair depending on the weather forecast.

"An up-do can help to keep your neck and shoulders cool and prevent sweaty strands from sticking to your skin."

Hot and Humid Weather:

If you are having a summer wedding, you might be worried about the heat and humidity. In this situation, you might want to consider wearing your hair up. An updo can help to keep your neck and shoulders cool and prevent sweaty strands from sticking to your skin. A sleek bun or textured style can also be a great option for this type of weather.

Windy Weather:

If your wedding day forecast is predicting gusty winds, you might want to opt for a hairstyle that will stay put. In this scenario, an updo again could save the day, especially for those brides who have long hair. This will keep your hair from flying around, and it won’t cause any major distractions during the ceremony or reception. Alternatively, if you’re particularly afraid of the wind and don’t want your hair to be blown around, consider a half-up hairstyle.

Rainy Weather:

A rainy wedding day can be a bit of a bummer for any bride. But don't let it ruin your big day. If rain is in the forecast, consider an updo, sleek or textured in style. It will help to keep your hair from getting wet and frizzy (subject to your natural hair type).

Cold Weather:

For a winter wedding, you could choose a glamorous down style such as romantic or set waves, or half up style. Updo's are also a beautiful choice that look elegant tucked under a hat or hood if having photos outside. Remember, as your hairstylist I will be able to recommend extra hair accessories that can make a statement and add warmth, like a furry coat or bridal headband.

If you are going to have a first look or pre-ceremony photoshoot inside or outside you may want to consider hiring your stylist to wait for you to return before you head down the aisle.

A Perfect Mix of Hot and Cold:

If you’re planning a spring or fall wedding when temperatures can fluctuate, you might want to consider how much time in or outside you will be. In New Zealand, especially in Auckland, this weather is often the most common year round.

If you plan to get ready on-site and you're wedding in going to be inside through and through then you have the widest choice of hairstyles.

If you are getting ready off-site, consider how far you need to walk to get into a bridal car and then again at the ceremony entrance.

If you are going to have a first look or pre-ceremony photoshoot inside or outside you may want to consider hiring your stylist to wait for you to return before you head down the aisle.

Alternatively, you can hire your stylist to return to create a complete second-look hairstyle to match a second wedding gown for your reception.

The key takeaway on deciding on whether to wear your hair up or down on your wedding day is to always keep the weather in mind. Talk with your hairstylist, and they will guide you in the right direction.

The ultimate goal is for you to feel comfortable, confident and beautiful. Take your time, consider the forecast, and trust your instincts. Remember, no matter if your hair is up or down, your wedding day is going to be a day to remember!
